PBJ CC Bus Update

Just a quick update. I was able to spend some time cleaning and removing bad components. There was quite a bit of time spent with a toothbrush and alcohol – and a soft brass brush with alcohol to remove the corrosion. I’m usure whether I’ll just re-solder where the copper now shows thru, or use UV solder mask.

In the original image on the left, you can see the corrosion coming off the capacitor and the power connector. This took a little cleaning with the brass brush, and light scraping. Gotta tell you, I was nervous as hell removing the parts with the heat. Add the scraping to that, and I was ready for a few shots after.

Again, the capacitor was the guilty component – it sprung a leak. This one also corrupted the socket legs/solder pads for U1 (74LS65). You can also see where the solder layer protecting the copper was impacted during the cleaning process. On the bottom, there was good news and bad news. The bad news was I accidently removed a solder pad for the IC socket. The good news is it didn’t go anywhere.

Next, I’ll be replacing the socket and fixing the area where the solder was removed. Then replace the caps and this is where the heavy decision making has to happen. Do I power this as originally intended, or use a 5/12vdc supply I have on hand…?
